CEREMONY: HONORING
MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS GORDON AND SHUGHART
Friday, October 3, 2003, 2 pm
Museum donor Peter T. Loftin will name the U.S. Army Special Operations Command exhibit area of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in honor of MSG Gary I. Gordon and SFC Randall D. Shughart in a ceremony taking place on the tenth anniversary of the battle in Mogadishu, Somalia. On October 3, 1993, Gordon and Shughart were serving on a sniper team with Task Force Ranger and were fatally wounded while voluntarily protecting wounded personnel of a downed helicopter. Their actions saved the pilot’s life. The widows of the two soldiers, Carmen Gordon and Stephanie Shughart, will attend the ceremony.
Peter Loftin, founder of BTI Telecom, and owner of the Carolina Cobras arena
football team, has donated $25,000 to the museum foundation through its Named
Gift program. Mr. Loftin will speak at the ceremony, as will General (Ret)
Jim Lindsay, President of the Board of ASOMF.
The ceremony is free and open to the public. Donations to the Airborne & Special
Operations Museum may be sent to the museum at PO Box 89, Fayetteville, NC
28302.
