On November 8, 1965, Soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade faced fierce enemy fire near Hill 65 during Operation HUMP in Vietnam. Among them was Specialist Five Lawrence Joel, a medic whose courage would save lives.
Shot in the leg, Joel bandaged his own wound and kept treating his fellow Soldiers. A second bullet struck his thigh, but he dragged himself across the battlefield to reach 13 more wounded men before his supplies ran out. He got more and went back, caring for the wounded until his own evacuation was ordered. His actions earned him the Medal of Honor.
Today, a display at the Museum brings Joel’s story to life. Come see the medic who refused to leave the Soldiers who needed him.
