Former researcher and longtime National Archives staffer Miriam Kleiman uncovered Army documentation at the National Archives that helped shatter Switzerland’s neutrality myth and exposed Swiss culpability in hiding Jewish assets stolen by the Nazis during World War II. Kleiman will discuss her research, subsequent investigations and litigation, the issue’s lasting impact, and related National Archives resources.
Biography
Miriam Kleiman started as a researcher at the National Archives in March 1996, when she was asked to explore the issue of lost Jewish assets in Swiss banks during World War II. This initial two-day assignment lasted four years – working for a law firm that sued the Swiss Banks and German companies on behalf of Holocaust survivors and their heirs. After the cases settled, she was hired by the National Archives as a historical researcher for the Interagency Working Group to Implement the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act. She then spent many years in Public Affairs proudly promoting the agency but recently returned to her first love – Research Services.
Articles on Ms. Kleiman and her research have appeared in the New York Times, USA Today, the Washington Post, and U.S. News and World Report. She has been interviewed on Good Morning America, and worked as a consultant to both the New York Times and ABC News. Previous to her work on this issue, Ms. Kleiman worked on Capitol Hill and for various non-profits. Miriam first met ASOM Director Jim Bartlinski in 2000, and they’ve been close friends and collaborators ever since.
